Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 24 — The Concrete Wall, Complete

The reinforced concrete wasn’t exactly popular with the women, but its performance could only be described as outstanding.

To put it simply, even a high-frequency blade couldn’t cut through it. It was so hard the blade would snap before it even made a mark.

With this, even a half-decent monster’s claws or fangs would be easily deflected.

So, I began pouring the reinforced concrete into the steel frames. Using my «Ironblood» skill, I shaped molds around the steel beams, then filled them.

It took a full day for the mixture to dry completely, so I kept making new molds and pouring concrete one after another.

Alongside this monotonous work, I also installed anti-monster magic tools.

On the outer side of the wall, I buried luminous magic stones imbued with the skill «Old Man’s Odor».

They absorbed sunlight, stored mana, and released a foul smell that repelled monsters.

Of course, I adjusted the stench so it wasn’t too terrible. If it was too strong, it would harm the workers too.

The smell was set to be just irritating enough to bother monsters with a good sense of smell.

Thanks to that, the wall construction went smoothly. After about two weeks, the barrier surrounding the entire land was complete.

That said, the reinforced concrete walls still had small gaps — the spaces left by the molds. Once the dividers were removed, countless gaps appeared at even intervals.

I filled those too with reinforced concrete, and at last, the wall was finished.

Inside the wall, I built several stairways so people could climb up and observe the perimeter from above.

The wall worked perfectly. Monsters couldn’t breach it, and thanks to the odor-emitting magic stones, most didn’t even approach.

Those that did turn back once they realized how solid the barrier was.

“Alright, everything’s going according to plan.”

Satisfied with the results, I muttered to myself and nodded several times.

The work from here would be simple for a while. I put in a request at the Adventurers’ Guild to clear out any monsters still inside the walls.

After that, the plan was to level the wild, uneven land — removing rocks, dead trees, and weeds while filling and shaving the terrain to make it even.

While I left most of the heavy labor to the adventurers, I continued another task of my own.

Mainly, developing the high-frequency blade.

As a magic tool, it was already finished, but the problem was designing a structure that could be mass-produced on an assembly line.

Right now, almost every step required manual work. Only the skill application could be called industrialized. Building a factory for this setup would be wasteful and far too inefficient.

So, day and night, I worked on redesigning the blade’s structure and testing prototypes.

I planned to make the handle modular — assembled from several parts — allowing different workers to handle component manufacturing and assembly separately.

Breaking the work down into smaller steps was the fastest and most rational way to improve both quality and efficiency.

Full mechanization was still a distant dream; the cost alone made it unrealistic.

Even in modern Japan, certain products requiring manual assembly were mass-produced this way.

It came down to the difficulty of automation, maintenance costs, and operational complexity.

Given all that, building a fully mechanized factory in this world — with its lower level of technology and education — was simply impossible.

While I was deep in thought about how to make the high-frequency blade production line more efficient, an unpleasant message arrived from the magic tool shop.

Apparently, the children from the orphanage had entered a dungeon.

  1. He did train them to enter dungeons, after all. Why is he surprised when they do it without him?

    1. Doesn't make the fact that they were literal children any worse... Well, he poses as their guardian so it's a given.
