Konbini Ossan Volume 3 Chapter 29 — The Cause of the Anomaly

I left the children and Arisa behind and stepped into a more open space.

If the enemy was truly searching for us, combat could break out at any moment. In that case, such a wide area worked to my advantage.

It made spotting an approaching foe easier, and I wouldn’t be hindered when moving during battle.

I waited there for some time. If enemies were to come, it would likely be from the depths of the dungeon.

That meant that if I waited here — closer to the depths than where the children were hidden — I would encounter them first.

After nearly an hour, I sensed a commotion approaching from deep within.

“Well, well. To be lying in wait — you’re a bold one.”

A voice rang out.

What appeared was several dozen golems, and among them a single humanoid-shaped one. The one who spoke was the humanoid golem.

“Nice to meet you. I am Yuichi Otsugi. May I ask your name?”

“How courteous, introducing yourself first. Very well, I shall etch my name into your very soul.”

The humanoid golem spoke with an absurdly arrogant air.

“My name is Schuberich! One of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Demon Lord’s Army, Schuberich of the Orichalcum Condor!”

“I see, Schuberich-san. There are a few things I’d like to ask you.”

At my words, Schuberich seemed to give off an aura of exasperated bewilderment. Well, it was a golem, so there was no way to truly read its expression.

“I am one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Demon Lord’s Army. Why do you not tremble?”

“Well. I had considered the possibility.”

The Royal Capital’s multi-dungeon was under the supervision of the kingdom’s knights.

To slip past their eyes and bring about such an abnormality was not something an ordinary being could achieve.

That’s why I had considered the possibility it wasn’t man-made. But as it turns out, it was sabotage by an elite of the Demon Lord’s Army.

“More importantly, Schuberich-san, are you the one who caused this dungeon’s abnormal state?”

“Just as you suspect. I have been gathering the energy that creates monsters here into the dungeon’s deepest point, and used it to produce large numbers of high-ranking golems.”

“And why would you do such a thing?”

“The answer is obvious — to exact revenge upon you humans!”

Revenge, Schuberich said. It seemed the Demon Lord’s Army harbored a deep grudge against humankind. His voice practically dripped with hatred.

“In time, this dungeon will overflow with powerful monsters, spilling beyond its bounds. When that happens, the kingdom will be destroyed. This is my great wish—revenge upon you humans!”

“And to achieve that, you can’t have any witnesses, is that it?”

If the anomaly were discovered before enough monsters were produced, the dungeon would be purged. To succeed, the entire process had to remain hidden.

I had no way of knowing how long this plan had taken to prepare, but it likely wasn’t one requiring a great deal of time.

With so many adventurers entering this multi-dungeon, any larger anomaly would inevitably draw more witnesses.

The knights would then intervene, and the monsters would be wiped out.

But the fact that Schuberich had put this plan into motion at all meant he was confident it could succeed — confident that the monsters would spill forth before the knights caught on.

That being the case, this sudden surge in monsters had likely begun only in the past few days.

And if I were defeated here, the anomaly would progress rapidly. The chances of the dungeon overflowing were extremely high.

If I didn’t put an end to Schuberich’s scheme here, the Royal Capital would be in grave danger.

“In that case, battle is unavoidable.”

I readied myself for combat.
