Konbini Ossan Volume 1 Chapter 19 – The Enchanter Old Man Sets Off
After learning Enchantment Magic from Shuri-kun, I finally prepared to leave the royal palace.
I also lightly studied recovery magic and support magic, which have similar magic circle structures.
I managed to learn just enough to perform the simplest spells.
…Though since I have almost no magic power, I can only cast them once per day — at best.
On the other hand, Enchantment Magic is apparently very efficient. I can perform up to ten enchantments per day.
Shuri-kun had commented, “I’ve never seen someone who can only enchant ten times per day,” or something along those lines.
Regardless, I spent two days learning magic and figured out a general plan for my future survival.
So today is finally the day of my departure.
I quietly got dressed, packed only the bare essentials provided by the palace, stuffed them into a bag, and slung it over my back as I left.
There wasn’t anyone in the hero group I was particularly close to, so naturally, there was no one to see me off.
Just as I was about to step out of the palace gates…
…someone was standing there, blocking my path.
“Um, Shuri-kun?”
“Yahho~ Otogin!”
It was Shuri-kun.
Had he come to see me off? If so, that makes me happy.
Once I leave the palace, it’s unlikely I’ll ever see him again. The fact that he came here to say goodbye shows he values our meeting.
I couldn’t help but place a hand on his head and pat him gently.
“Ehehe~, Otogin sure likes patting heads, huh?”
“Yes. I do enjoy patting Shuri-kun’s head.”
We stayed like that for a minute or two, just quietly.
But of course, I couldn’t keep doing this forever. I took my hand off his head and stood facing him properly.
“Well then, Shuri-kun. Thank you for everything these past two days. I’ll make good use of the magic you taught me as I leave the palace and begin my journey.”
“Yup! Do your best. Otogin, you’re one of my few disciples, after all.”
“…Am I your disciple?”
“Let’s go with that, okay?”
“Thank you very much.”
A title like “Disciple” might come in handy someday. I’ll gladly accept it.
“So, Otogin. I didn’t come all the way here just to say goodbye.”
“You didn’t?”
“Nope. I actually wanted to give you a parting gift.”
With that, Shuri-kun handed me a rucksack-like bag he’d been carrying. It seemed to contain a few things, but it felt strangely light.
“First, this bag is a magic item called a storage pouch.”
“A magic item, huh…”
I hadn’t had much time to study up on magical tools in the grand library, so this was a bit of a knowledge gap for me.
“This pouch can hold way more than it looks. This one’s capacity is about the size of a personal bathtub.”
“That’s quite a lot.”
“Not really. Standard storage pouches can hold three to five times this much.
…
This is just a small parting gift—something that won’t hurt me to give away. So it’s kind of low-grade, really.”
Explaining your own gift like that… Yep, Shuri-kun really is a bit odd. But I don’t dislike quirky people.
…Then again, I should correct myself.
Shuri-kun isn’t a child. He just looks like one. In truth, he’s a seasoned elder. So treating him like a child is disrespectful.
I should show him proper respect.
“Hm? What’s with the sudden head pat, Otogin?”
“I’m showing my respect to you, Shuri-kun.”
“Ohh, good, good. Respect me more~!”
And with that, our conversation wandered off again.
