The day after clearing the Wandering Dungeon.
After our usual morning training, we entered the F-Rank dungeon as planned.
Naturally, we had no problems defeating the Boss on the lowest underground floor in about 2 hours. Since it was an ordinary boss, all we gained were【xxx Resistance】 skills, but they were important in their own right, so they were not something to scoff at.
The next day was the E-Rank dungeon, and we cleared that one in about 2 hours as well. Once again, most of what we obtained were【Resistance】skills. Perhaps this meant that we had already acquired most of the low-rarity skills that suited each of us.
“Soushi-san, there was a collection request that seems to be a good fit for our party. What do you think?”
That evening, Mariane brought it up during dinner. I felt a little pleased that Mariane had referred to〈Saul's Guidance〉as “our party”.
“What kind of request is it?”
“Collecting the wings of Paralysis Moths. However, they must be from ordinary field monsters, not the ones found in dungeons.”
We had encountered Paralysis Moths in a dungeon before. Their materials were wings with a texture like silk. So they wanted the “wild variety”, so to speak.
“We know where they appear, right?”
“Yes. They are said to appear in the forest farther beyond the abandoned village where the Wandering Dungeon was located. It is quite a large forest, though...”
“Well, it should be a piece of cake for us, right?”
Rani said it casually while stuffing meat into her mouth.
“Incidentally, the client is the Toronto Trading Company, so I thought that aspect might also suit you, Soushi-san.”
“I see.”
As expected of Mariane, she was impeccable even when it came to considerations like that.
Apparently, the Toronto Trading Company was one of the top three trading companies in the Royal Capital.
I had only just become acquainted with its chairman, Mr. Toronto, but apparently adventurers had ways of strengthening connections like this. I still had a lot to learn, both in experience and knowledge.
“There shouldn't be any problem with the monster rank, so I think we should accept it. What do you all think?”
When I asked, the three girls agreed without any particular objections.
“Then, Mariane-san, please take care of it first thing tomorrow morning.”
“Understood. Incidentally, they are not as uncommon as Unicorn Rabbits, but their appearance rate still seems to be rather low.”
“If they're more common than Unicorn Rabbits, then there shouldn't be a problem.”
“I think so too. But knowing you, Soushi-sama, there may be another special monster that appears.”
When Rani and Freynil responded that way, Sphenia also nodded with an expression of understanding.
“Oh, so it happens outside dungeons too.”
Perhaps even Mariane wanted to see one of our party's peculiarities with her own eyes. A request that was killing three birds with one stone. As expected, a highly skilled Guild employee was not to be underestimated.
The next morning, we completed the request formalities at the Guild and headed straight for the forest where the wild(?) Paralysis Moths were said to appear.
The abandoned village we passed along the way had become nothing more than ruins, with not a single undead in sight.
Apparently, the village had been abandoned because of an outbreak of disease, but perhaps the presence of the Paralysis Moths we were about to hunt had also been a contributing factor.
About 30 minutes after passing the abandoned village, we came upon a dense forest. There was a place that seemed to be a game trail, or perhaps a path, and we entered the forest from there, with Rani leading the way.
When searching for wild monsters, we relied on Rani's nose and ears. She was a wolf beastkin, but in addition to her high combat ability, she was also highly skilled at detecting prey. Without her【Jinx】skill, she would originally have been in high demand among all sorts of parties.
“Hmm, there's a faint poisonous smell throughout the area. Could it be that the Paralysis Moths have multiplied?”
Rani said something rather alarming as she twitched her nose.
“If that's true, it could be pretty bad. Adventurers aside, it could become dangerous if ordinary people entered.”
“This forest was apparently once called the ‘Forest of Disease’. They say it was named that because of the presence of Paralysis Moths, but if they have multiplied excessively, the danger level will certainly be higher.”
At Mariane's words, I looked over my shoulder at Mr.【Bad Luck】. No, if we're talking about breeding, perhaps it was Ms.【Jinx】instead?
“The smell is getting stronger, so I think we'll find them if we keep going, but it might be a little difficult to tell which direction it's coming from.”
“How about having Fray use «Absolution» to clean the surrounding area first, then following the direction from which the smell starts flowing?”
“Oh, that might work. Fray, can you do «Absolution»?”
“Yes, no problem. I'll use «Absolution» with【Amplify】.”
When Freynil activated «Absolution», I could clearly feel the air becoming cleaner. Without realizing it, we must have entered an area where the Paralysis Moths’ scales were floating at a fairly high concentration.
It certainly wouldn't have been strange for an ordinary person to develop symptoms resembling an illness simply from being exposed to this.
A little while later, Rani sniffed the air several times and nodded.
“Yeah, it's easier to tell now. This way.”
Rani quickened her pace. After about 10 minutes, something registered on【Presence Detection】. There seemed to be at least 20 of them spread across a wide area
That number might be fine in a dungeon, but in the field, wouldn't it be fairly dangerous?
“Oh, the forest opens up ahead. Doesn't it look like some kind of flower field?”
Just as Rani said, about a 100 meters ahead the trees came to an end, and beyond them was an area that looked like a flower field. Several enormous moths had landed on the carpet of flowers, resting their wings.
It was quite an extraordinary sight.
“Okay, once we get closer, Fray, use «Absolution» with【Amplify】. Sphenia-san and Mariane-san, I want you two to bring them down. If I do it, I'll crush the wings along with them, so I'll only step in if necessary. Rani, you're good too, right?”
“Yes.”
“I’m good at aerial combat, so leave it to me.”
As we approached the flower field, Freynil activated «Absolution», rendering all of the Paralysis Moths’ scales harmless.
The five of us entered the flower field, and the Moths noticed our presence and took flight all at once. Sphenia's arrows and Mariane's throwing blades shot them down one after another. Rani also used【Vault】and【Airstride】to tear apart only their bodies.
Before long, the 20-odd Paralysis Moths had all been wiped out. Apparently, no matter how thoroughly monsters are exterminated, more will continue to appear from somewhere, so the basic rule is to eliminate every one you find.
Afterward, we split up and collected the mana stones and the silk-like wings that were the objective of this request, storing them in my【Item Box】.
“That completes the request, Soushi-sama.”
“Yeah. Thanks to you and Rani, we finished quickly. With this kind of request, finding the targets is probably the hardest part.”
As I answered Freynil, I looked toward Sphenia. She seemed to be staring into the distance, as though something had caught her attention.
“Sphenia, is something bothering you?”
“Yes. I can see something strange over there.”
“Something strange?”
I looked in the direction Sphenia was pointing, and there was a mountain. It was a small mountain, about the size of one of the rural mountains in Japan.
The problem was that a gigantic, vividly colored moth was perched on its slope with its wings spread wide.
Judging by its size compared to the trees on the mountain, its wingspan must have been about 20 meters. There were eye-like patterns on its wings, and its body was thick and bulky.
Two leaf-like antennae protruded from its head, giving it an appearance that might make someone with a fear of insects faint at the sight of it.
“What is that? Is that a gigantic Paralysis Moth...?”
“I don't know, but from its appearance, it seems to be the same species. Mariane-san, do you know what it is?”
When Sphenia asked, Mariane, who was also looking at the gigantic moth, nodded.
“I believe it is probably a Queen Moth. It is the matriarch of the Paralysis Moths and apparently produces large numbers of them. If it were to fly over a town, its poisonous scales could cause tremendous damage.”
“What? That's such a troublesome monster? Wait, so this means we encountered a rare monster because of Soushi's skill, right?”
When Rani said that, Freynil smiled.
“As expected of Soushi-sama.”
I hadn't done anything, though... But Freynil looked happy, so I decided to let it be.
“Anyway, now that we've found it, we can't exactly leave it alone. Mariane, it's okay for us to kill that thing, right?”
“Of course. It is a monster for which an emergency extermination request is issued as soon as it is discovered. It is B-Rank, so be careful.”
I had expected something like this might happen, but it had once again turned into the kind of development that was typical of〈Saul's Guidance〉.
It reminded me of the giant moth monster that sided with humanity in a movie I had seen as a child, so I felt a little reluctant to kill it... Though with a monster that possessed poisonous scales, exterminating it was probably unavoidable.
