Konbini Ossan Volume 9 Chapter 26 — Metidovan’s Disposition
“Now then. Otogi has been appointed as the administrator of the Great Forest Autonomous District.
…
However, managing unfamiliar territory will surely come with many difficulties, no? In that case, a capable assistant will be necessary.”
As she speaks, Vladgaria directs her gaze toward Metidovan.
That can only mean one thing.
“D-Demon King, are you saying-?!”
“Indeed. And just so happens, does our army not have someone perfectly suited? A man well-versed in various fields, experienced in assisting duties, and yet, conveniently, currently without any position or task.”
Yes. In other words, she intends to assign Metidovan as an assistant to us at Otogi Company.
“I-Is that truly acceptable?”
“Of course. In fact, it must be someone whose abilities can be trusted. That makes you the perfect choice.”
“Th-Thank you very much, Demon King!”
At Vladgaria’s words, Metidovan’s eyes well up with tears.
That is only natural.
Being stripped of his position as one of the Seven Generals, and placed under indefinite suspension, should have meant remaining within the Demon King’s army with no duties or role, a severe punishment, essentially leaving him sidelined with no way to act.
However, if he becomes an assistant, the situation changes entirely.
The removal of his position was merely to smoothly assign him a new role as Assistant Administrator of the Great Forest Autonomous District.
And the indefinite suspension was simply a pretext to dispatch him to Otogi Company without being burdened by other duties within the Demon King’s army.
In other words, it functions as no real punishment at all.
Rather, it places him in a position of great importance for future relations with Otogi Company.
“I’m glad for you, Metidovan.”
“Otogi… I owe you a debt beyond repayment. Through my role as your assistant, I will devote my entire being to repaying that debt.”
Saying so, Metidovan and I extend our hands and exchange a firm handshake.
“I look forward to working with you, Metidovan.”
“Likewise. I entrust myself to you, Otogi.”
And so, the alliance between Otogi Company and the Demon King’s army was successfully concluded, and we secured a foothold in the Great Forest Autonomous District.
It seems things are about to become busy again.
Just as I was thinking that, hurried footsteps echoed through the hall.
“Darling! This is bad!”
With a loud bang, the meeting room doors burst open, and Joan rushes inside.
“What’s wrong, Joan? You seem quite panicked.”
“We just got a transmission from Otogi Company headquarters! It’s an emergency one!”
An emergency transmission. It uses a high-output communication device, allowing direct contact with headquarters without relay stations.
It consumes a great deal of energy and has poor sound quality, so it is not used normally. However, it has the advantage of working even in places like the Demon King’s castle, where regular communication cannot reach.
Because it can be received anywhere, its use is restricted to emergencies only. Hence the name, emergency transmission.
“That sounds serious. What exactly happened?”
When I ask, Joan speaks with visible tension.
“A group called the Naitō Clan has launched an attack on the Runegard Kingdom! And the Heroes who tried to fight them got hit hard, they’re injured and had to retreat.
…
They’re asking us to return as quickly as possible and help!”
That was truly urgent.
A report of damage caused by the Naitō Clan’s uprising, and a plea for assistance.
“Otogi.”
Metidovan speaks to me as my expression stiffens.
“You’re going back, aren’t you? To your country.”
“Yes. They need help as soon as possible.”
“Then I will go with you.”
“You will, Metidovan?”
At my question, Metidovan nods.
“I want you to make full use of my knowledge. If those close to you are in danger, then allow me to help. This is precisely the moment for me to repay my debt.”
“I see.”
It seems his resolve is firm.
“Then please, I’m counting on you. Let’s go, Metidovan!”
“Indeed! I shall wield my knowledge and power to their fullest!”
And so, with Metidovan now as a new ally, I set out in haste to return to the Runegard Kingdom.
