Konbini Ossan Volume 10 Chapter 2 — Otogi’s Return
After that, we safely returned to Otogi Trading’s headquarters.
Upon arrival, we immediately headed for the royal capital of the Runegard Kingdom.
Our destination was the royal castle, to seek an audience with the king.
Thanks to arrangements made by Marceline, the audience was granted without delay.
I stood alone, facing the king. It was my second meeting with him since being summoned to this world.
“Your Majesty. I have come today with a request.”
As I spoke, the geezer’s expression turned sour.
“A request? How shameless. Speak quickly.”
It seemed I was not particularly favored by the geezer.
Well, that was only natural. Otogi Trading now controls nearly all distribution within the Runegard Kingdom, and possesses assets and technological power rivaling that of the nation itself.
And I am its representative.
From the perspective of the nation’s ruler, that cannot be a pleasant situation.
“Then I will be direct. I would like the troops stationed along the borders with the three nations we are currently at war with to focus solely on defense.”
“You would have us not strike the enemy? Do not speak nonsense.”
“If that is the case, then it cannot be helped. There is a possibility that Otogi Trading’s supply of goods to the military may be disrupted. We too have our limitations.”
In other words, a threat to stop supplying the army.
If an ordinary merchant said such a thing, it would be nothing more than empty words. But Otogi Trading is different in every respect.
In the first place, many of the weapons used by the military are built using technology provided by Otogi Trading. If I were to refuse, they could cease functioning entirely.
That is how deeply Otogi Company has extended its influence into every corner of this nation. Precisely so that in situations like this, our demands cannot be refused.
After hearing my words, the king remained silent for a long time.
But eventually, he spoke.
“Very well. I promise that we will focus solely on defense.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.”
I bowed my head, then spoke of the “compensation.”
“In that case, as thanks for moving the army according to our request, Otogi Trading will also deploy its defense division forces to assist in bringing this war to an end.”
“That is enough. Do as you please.”
Though framed as gratitude, it was essentially a proposal that benefited me. Even so, the king had no choice but to accept.
With permission granted, Otogi Trading can now officially move to the front lines under the kingdom’s request.
This ensures we can operate freely at the front without interference from the military.
With that, my objective achieved through the audience, I left the royal castle.
I returned to Otogi Trading headquarters and began preparations to deploy forces toward the three nations.
A few days later, Joan’s defense unit also returned to headquarters, and all forces were assembled.
After spending a day on rest and resupplying, preparations were finally complete.
“Well then, I’m off.”
Just before departure, I spoke to my wives.
“Take care, Yūichi.”
Arisa approached first, and we embraced.
After parting, Shirley stepped forward next.
“Please come back safely.”
“Yes. Leave it to me.”
After finishing my embrace with Shirley, Maria came next.
“I’ll take care of Tiana and Tio here, so don’t worry.”
“Yes, I’m counting on you.”
For this operation, Tiana and Tio will not be coming along. Likewise, Joan and Yairo will remain at Otogi Trading. They are currently resting to recover from the fatigue of the expedition.
Those who accompanied us as reinforcements from the Demon King’s army will remain behind to guard headquarters this time.
Instead, Marceline and Shuri-kun will accompany us on this mission.
With my farewell to Maria complete, it was finally time to depart.
Having been away on expeditions repeatedly, I have made my wives endure loneliness time and again.
I want to finish this as quickly as possible and return.
