Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 16 — The Fangs Lurking in The Nightlife District
The place Jin drove me to was Shanghai’s hottest district, LOVEAND69. A nightlife area lined with bars, restaurants, live houses, and clubs.
Loud music spilled into the streets, and the open terraces were packed with customers enjoying drinks and food.
I had come out of curiosity for the live houses and clubs, but first, food. I needed to deal with my hunger before drinking.
We entered a random restaurant, and I pointed at items on the menu while Jin placed the order.
My heart stirred as I watched the neon lights flicker beyond the glass, waiting for the food to arrive, when I sensed an ominous presence approaching from behind.
I turned, and saw a glint at my throat.
I understood instantly. A blade.
Still seated, I grabbed the attacker’s wrist. He was fast, but I was faster.
I seized the weapon and used【Warp】to move behind him.
I drove the dagger into the back of his neck. The attacker coughed out, “Gah…”, as blood spilled from his mouth, and he collapsed.
At the dull thud, every eye in the restaurant turned toward us. A shrill scream rose from a female customer, and the other patrons fled outside in panic.
In stark contrast to the chaos, I calmly returned to my seat.
“Jin-san. Could you take care of this? I’ll pay for the trouble.”
“…No, payment won’t be necessary. And my apologies. I intended to move immediately, but you were faster, Hunter Matsubara. I couldn’t intervene in time.”
“…I see. More importantly, I didn’t expect someone to come alone. He must have been quite confident in his skills.”
“Judging by his movements, he was at least A-Rank. Whether he was unaware of the previous incident or hoped to monopolize the reward… either way, misjudging your strength was his undoing.”

I stood up to leave. Jin went to explain the situation to the owner while I stepped outside first.
At that very moment, rough-looking men appeared from both sides and surrounded me.
“I thought foot traffic had thinned out. So these guys were the reason.”
Jin soon exited as well. He scanned left and right before speaking in a low voice.
“Hunter Matsubara, they are a criminal organization that preys on the weak through debt and drugs,〈Vultures〉.”
“They’re after the reward too, I assume?”
“Yes. The underworld operatives also work as hunters. Among them are individuals equivalent to A-Rank and S-Rank. Their boss is said to be on that level as well.”
“People like that choose to operate in the shadows?”
“The more sources of income, the better. And with enough power, even the government and police hesitate to interfere. For them, it is an efficient business.”
“Good to know.”
“More importantly, shall I assist?”
“That would end this faster. But please stay inside the shop, Jin-san.”
“Understood.”
If someone equivalent to S-Rank like Jin launched a surprise attack mid-battle, it would complicate things. Better to have him wait inside.
