Konbini Ossan Volume 9 — Metidovan's Rebellion || Chapter 1 — The Situation of the Rebel Army
“It’s been a while, Otogi-san. I’ve come today to explain the current state of the Demon King’s Army.”
The one saying this with a bow of his head is Ichiro Suzuki, the Chancellor of the Demon King’s Army.
As soon as we received the report that a rebel faction had formed within the Demon King’s Army and that it had effectively split in two, he rushed here right away.
“Thank you, Ichiro Suzuki-san. We had no grasp of the Demon King’s Army’s current situation on our side, so this helps a great deal.”
“I’m glad to hear that. And to be honest, we were also hoping to request your assistance, Otogi-san. For that reason as well, I wished to report the details as quickly as possible.”
I see. In other words, the situation within the Demon King’s Army must be quite serious.
I escort Ichiro Suzuki into the reception room and receive his detailed report.
“First, regarding the details of the rebel faction. Within the Demon King’s Army, there exists something like a subordinate organization under the〈Four Heavenly Kings〉called the〈Seven Generals〉.
…
This time, one of those〈Seven Generals〉, Wise General Metidovan-dono, has raised a rebel army.”
At the name Metidovan, I tilt my head.
Now that I think about it, it sounds vaguely familiar. Though I can’t quite recall where I heard it.
“What kind of person is this Metidovan?”
“He calls himself a Genius Goblin and is, in fact, an ordinary goblin. However, he possesses extremely advanced knowledge of alchemy and necromancy, and he has the intelligence worthy of the title Wise General.
…
Making use of that knowledge, he remained in the Demon King’s Castle while using homunculi to carry out various operations on the front lines.”
“I see. And what kind of operations were those?”
“The largest operation he carried out was a plan to breed Wurgas within the Runegard Kingdom, create improved superior variants, and then launch an assault on the royal capital.
…
However, it seems they were wiped out by a mysterious adventurer just before the attack.”
Hearing that makes me remember.
Now that I think about it, when I once went out hunting Wurgas in a mentally unstable state, there was a goblin rambling about something or other.
So that goblin was Metidovan. Fate certainly connects things in unexpected ways.
“And why did this Metidovan start a rebellion?”
“Yes. In truth, due to certain events in the past, he harbors an extremely deep hatred toward humanity. He dislikes humans so much that he even shows aggressive hostility toward the humans within the Demon King’s Army itself.
…
So when the Demon King declared that she would join hands with humans, he flew into a rage and formed a rebel faction.”
“I see. So he’s essentially the leading extremist against humanity.”
“Yes. Exactly.”
Ichiro Suzuki nods in agreement with my words.
“Within the Demon King’s Army there has long existed a faction that could be called extremist toward humanity.
…
Almost all of them support Metidovan-dono, and currently about one-fifth of the Demon King’s Army has joined the rebels.”
“That’s quite a number.”
If twenty percent of an organization becomes hostile, the organization might as well stop functioning.
In that case, it’s only natural that discussions regarding our alliance could not proceed.
“The numbers are troublesome enough, but the fact that they are not complete enemies but our own people makes it even more complicated.
…
They are still members of the Demon King’s Army, so we cannot simply suppress them violently and kill them. At present, the Demon King is trying to suppress them while minimizing casualties as much as possible.
…
However, Metidovan-dono understands this, and he has been making very unpleasant moves, which has made things difficult.”
With conditions that troublesome, even with four times the manpower, suppressing them would certainly not be easy.
“I understand. So then, Ichiro Suzuki-san, what exactly is the Demon King’s Army requesting from us?”
When I steer the conversation to the main point, Ichiro Suzuki nods and answers.
“Yes. To put it plainly, we would like your help suppressing them. To subdue them while keeping casualties to a minimum, we would need about ten times their strength.
…
Furthermore, simply having a force added to our hand that could, if necessary, ‘kill them without issue’ would make it much harder for Metidovan-dono to act freely.”
In other words, with the forces of Otogi Trading Company involved, there would be no problem if Metidovan’s rebel army ended up being killed during suppression.
Even if we had no intention of doing so, the mere possibility carries weight.
They can adopt bold strategies precisely because they believe they won’t be killed. Simply removing that sense of safety should greatly restrict the rebels’ movements.
“So, what do you think, Otogi-san? Would you be willing to cooperate with us?”
Ichiro Suzuki asks with a hint of anxiety. I immediately nod in response.
“Of course. Otogi Trading Company would be glad to cooperate. Our alliance with the Demon King’s Army was just about to be established. It would be unacceptable for it to be undone by a rebel faction.”
“Oh! Thank you very much!”
“Not at all. Let’s gather our executives today and begin drafting a plan.”
With that, I shake hands with Ichiro Suzuki and promise our cooperation.
