Konbini Ossan Volume 9 Chapter 20 — Fortress Secured
Surrounded, with no escape routes, their defensive walls destroyed, and their supplies already depleted from the previous sabotage operation, there are few who can maintain the will to fight under such conditions.
One after another, the rebels file out of the fortress as prisoners.
Our forces restrain them, subduing them in rapid succession.
Watching this increasingly routine process from the corner of my eye, I head toward the assault unit’s formation.
The assault unit is composed of only the elite among elites. It is formed solely from Otogi Trading’s forces, with no personnel from the Demon King’s army.
This is because only Otogi Trading is equipped with non-lethal weaponry.
The Demon King’s elite forces are assigned to the rear, tasked with capturing any rebels that slip past our containment.
Reaching the front of the formation, I find Vladgaria, the only participant from the Demon King’s army, and Otogi Trading’s top elites: Yairo, Tio, Tiana, and Joan.
“Now, we will assign unit divisions. As a rule, maintain at least two-person teams at all times. If you find yourselves outnumbered, retreat. Regroup with other units and prioritize safe suppression.”
As I speak, I transmit the unit assignment data to everyone. The goggles equipped by each member can display a variety of useful information, including what I have just sent.
“Additionally, if you encounter Metidovan, who is the highest-priority target among the enemy forces, withdraw immediately. Under no circumstances is anyone to engage him.
…
Vladgaria and I will handle Metidovan as the designated response unit. Report to us at once, we will move immediately.”
The plan is simple. The general soldiers are left to the teams, while the most dangerous target, Metidovan, will be handled by the two strongest; myself and Vladgaria.
During the sabotage operation, even Yairo struggled against his forces. Considering the possibility of further hidden trump cards, only the two of us can safely engage him.
“Make your final preparations. In five minutes, begin the operation upon receiving the signal.”
That concludes my briefing. Next, Vladgaria steps forward.
“I know this will place a burden on you all. However, even if they are rebels, they are still my precious subordinates.
…
Please, if possible, subdue them without taking their lives. And above all, value your own lives as well.”
With that, Vladgaria lowers her head.
“I beg you. Please… save my subordinates.”
Perhaps moved by her sincerity, the morale of the troops visibly rises.
After that, everyone prepares for the operation. Equipment is checked, and we wait for the signal to begin. Some units move to different positions depending on their assigned entry points.
The second squad, led by Joan and Yairo, heads to the left flank. The third squad, led by Tio and Tiana, moves to the right flank.
And then there is the first squad, the elite unit that will breach from the front with Vladgaria and me.
These three squads will execute the assault.
“The operation begins now.”
The start signal appears on the goggles worn by all members. I confirm the transmission as well.
“Let’s go, Vladgaria.”
“Indeed. We must stop Metidovan as quickly as possible.”
When the time comes, Metidovan will not hesitate to kill our personnel. After all, he is a survivor of the Mediterranean people, who harbors deep hatred toward humans.
Before that happens, Vladgaria and I must stop him.
The two of us advance, entering the fortress ahead of everyone else.
The units following behind also seem to be infiltrating smoothly and carrying out the operation.
Using magic guns loaded with tranquilizer rounds, magic stun weapons, and capture nets, they subdue and capture the rebels one after another.
“It seems the teams in the rear are doing well.”
“Indeed. However, the resistance is weak. There is no sign of Metidovan’s homunculi either.”
Just as Vladgaria says, the homunculi are nowhere to be seen, and the rebels’ resistance is clearly feeble, as if their morale has already been broken. The captures are proceeding too easily.
“This may be a delaying tactic. We must find him as quickly as possible.”
Vladgaria’s assessment suggests that Metidovan may be using the rebels as bait while preparing some kind of final move; his trump card.
“Yes… let’s go.”
I nod, and together with Vladgaria, we press deeper into the fortress.
