Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 8 — The Reason for the Assault | Suggestion is Refused!
The hunters who had ambushed me in front of the dungeon entrance and attacked without a word were annihilated… save for a lucky handful who survived.
The plaza before the dungeon, which had become a battlefield, was left with nothing but a large circular scorch mark.
The hunters’ equipment, belongings, and even their flesh and blood had been reduced to ashes without leaving a single fragment behind.
To extract information about this assault, I rushed over to the survivors, whose faces were dyed in terror, and bound them using【Debuff Magic】.
I had thought it might be troublesome if they resisted or tried to flee, but their expressions shifted from fear to despair. Their shoulders slumped, and they submitted to being restrained without resistance.
As I led them along in search of the person I needed, I spotted Jin running toward me, shouting my name.
“Hunter Matsubara! Are you unharmed?”
(E/N: There are blind people, then there is this rat smh 😮💨)
“Yes, as you can see, I’m fine. Were you evacuating, Jin?”
“I became thirsty and stopped by a convenience store. When I returned, you were already engaged in combat with a large group of hunters… I wanted to intervene, but with that many people packed together…”
“I see. I was caught off guard by the sudden attack as well, but I managed to repel them. And I’ve secured some sources of information like this.”
“That is good to hear. May I speak with them? I will question them about how this attack on you came about.”
“Please do.”
I handed them over without hesitation. Jin began speaking to them on the spot. Naturally, the conversation was in Chinese, so I understood none of it.
After a brief exchange, Jin turned back toward me.
“To summarize, it seems that on an underground web, a request has been circulating to investigate the purpose of Hunter Matsubara’s visit to our country.”
“I see. But their attitude was less about investigating and more about being fully intent on killing me.”
“I believe that is because the method of investigation was not specified. Additionally… this is merely my speculation, but they may have planned to kill you and then submit a fabricated report afterward to collect the reward.”
“That does sound plausible. In that case, unless the request is withdrawn, more people will either monitor me or attack me like this?”
“…I cannot say for certain. After hearing how this ended, some may cancel the request or limit themselves to surveillance… but there are always reckless fools.”
“True…”
“If you wish, I can speak to the Chairman. We can assign additional capable support staff to accompany you in dungeon exploration as well. That should prevent incidents like this from occurring again.”
It was a generous offer, but I couldn’t fully trust them. I would rather avoid clearing dungeons alongside people I couldn’t completely believe in.
(E/N: Couldn't is not the correct word, it should be oughtn't 😮💨)
A dungeon is a lawless zone. They might seize an opportunity to attack me there, and even if not, revealing too much of my hand would be unwise.
Besides, while being under constant threat of attack is troublesome, from the perspective of my own growth and reducing China’s combat strength, it might actually be better if more of them made a move.
“Thank you for the consideration. However, I’m fine as things are.”
“Understood.”
After that, I left the explanation of the situation to the police officers and paramedics, who rushed to the scene, to Jin, and leaned against the car door, waiting for everything to settle.

E/N:
The fate of a rat is horrible… in any case, I'm not sympathizing with this clown, Jin, no matter what!
