Soul Devourer Chapter 3 Episode 44 — Refusing a Desperate Request, and Onward to Another Country
After checking the details of the newly acquired title, I next turned my attention to my attributes.
The last time I checked them was after wiping out the Chi*ese hunter group.
Back then, my attributes had increased by about 11,000, but this time they had only gone up by roughly 2,000.
For defeating mutation-enhanced monsters on par with S-rank, this was honestly a bit disappointing.
Unless there’s a stampede or a large-scale assault, it doesn’t look like I can expect massive attribute growth anymore.
Alright, time to shift my mindset and look at the excess experience; about 90 million has piled up.
I’ve already cleared all A-rank and above dungeons within the country, so if I want to continue dungeon conquest from here on out, I’ll have to head overseas.
But visiting other countries means there’s a chance I’ll get tangled up with lunatics like〈Grimm Reaper〉again.
With that in mind, I should probably strengthen my existing skills in preparation for such scenarios.

Leaving [14,208,864] excess experience unused, I finished allocating it.
After finishing my status check, I had dinner at the hotel that evening, then returned to my room, watched a car racing movie, checked out some dungeon-clearing streams on Huntube, and went to sleep.

The next day. After checking out of the hotel and returning from Okinawa to Tokyo, I found myself in the guildmaster’s office.
“I see. You’ve cleared not only S-rank dungeons, but all A-rank dungeons as well, and now you wish to challenge dungeons in other countries.”
“Yes.”
“ … To be frank, we do not want to send Hunter Matsubara overseas.”
“ … ”
“There are two reasons. First, in the event of another large-scale assault like the one carried out by the Chi*ese hunter group, we want you to remain as part of our defensive strength.”
“ … ”
“Second, if Hunter Matsubara were to be captured or attacked in another country, we, being a small and weak nation, would have no means of helping you.”
“ … ”
“Please, I beg of you. Hunter Matsubara is an indispensable existence for our country. For the sake of the Japanese people, could you reconsider?”
The guildmaster bowed deeply, his voice filled with desperation.
However, I couldn’t accept that request.
Being unable to move because of the mere possibility of a foreign attack would be suffocating, and I don’t have the hero mentality of wanting to protect every single citizen.
If there’s someone within reach who needs help, I’ll extend my hand without hesitation, but the people I want to protect above all else are just my Dad and Mom.
One might say that if I truly want to protect my parents, I should stay in Japan and have no need to go abroad, but doing that would bore me to death.
In the end, I guess I’m just selfish and self-centered.
“ … Please raise your head, Guildmaster.”
The guild master slowly lifted his head and looked at me with weak eyes, as if he already knew my answer.
“I’m sorry. I can’t comply with that request. I still want to become stronger.”
“I see… Have you decided which country you’ll go to?”
“No, not yet… though I just thought of it now. I’m thinking of going to Chi*a.”
“And why is that?”
“I don’t know about other countries, but Chi*a lost a significant portion of its forces in the previous assault. As retaliation, there’s a chance they might attack again.”
“That’s true.”
“If that happens, wouldn’t it be possible to negotiate them into stopping the assault if I go on a rampage in Chi*a and cause some damage?”
“Hm… I’m well aware of how strong you are, Hunter Matsubara, but you shouldn’t underestimate Chi*a’s forces too much.
…
Instead of expanding the damage, there’s a possibility you’d be killed instantly, which could provoke an even fiercer assault on Japan.”
“Well, that possibility exists. But, that’s about the best idea I’ve got, so if I decide to go along with it, I'll contact you.”
“ … ”
“Well then, I’ll be taking my leave. I’ll contact you once I’m about to head to Chi*a.”
“Understood.”
After leaving the guildmaster’s office and returning home, I began making preparations to head for Chi*a.

E/N:
Instead of asking him to stay, ask your low-grade S-Rankers to up their game, GM!
And with this chapter, we end Volume 3! Next Volume's full with chaos in Chi*a! Look forward to it!
I'll upload the Status and Details chapter for this Volume tomorrow since it takes a lot of time to edit that…
Stay tuned!
