Konbini Ossan Volume 8 Chapter 23 — The Fifth Checkpoint
With the fourth checkpoint cleared as well, I lead the members of the Demon King’s army onward to the fifth gate.
Incidentally, Marceline asked for a reward of going on a private date with just the two of us, so I plan to fulfill that request at a later time.
Up until the fourth gate, the primary goal had been to showcase Otogi Trading’s technological capabilities. However, from this fifth checkpoint onward, the focus changes.
Rather than technology, it is a demonstration of pure combat strength. That is the purpose from here on.
Therefore, while there may be no novel technology to display, the individuals waiting ahead are on an entirely different level of power compared to those before.
“Well then, the latter half begins from here.”
Standing before the door to the fifth checkpoint, I address the Demon King’s army behind me.
“I shall break through this one as well.”
“Very well, Leonis. The later my turn comes, the more advantageous it will be for me.”
As Leonis declares his determination, Vladgaria speaks casually.
“Then let us proceed.”
With that, I finally open the door to the fifth gate.
Waiting inside is a certain individual. For me, the only person in this world whom I can call my master.
“Well now, welcome, welcome. I’ve been waiting, members of the Demon King’s army.
…
I, former Court Magician, Shuriva, am the one handling this fifth gate. Though honestly, you’re looking pretty battered, aren’t you?”
Smiling brightly as he delivers his taunt is the small-statured mage in charge of the fifth checkpoint, my mentor, and now Otogi Trading’s Magical Technology Advisor, Shuri-kun.
“Oh?”
At that moment, Vladgaria’s gaze sharpens abruptly.
“This one… possesses considerable magical power.”
“Ah, so Demon King-chan can tell?”
Shuri-kun says this, his smile fading into a sharp look as he returns Vladgaria’s gaze.
“Personally, I’d love to see Demon King-chan’s power up close. But, well, there’s an order to things, right? Let’s start with the lion big brother over there who looks strong enough.”
“I am strong. I will consider such words an insult.”
Apparently irritated by Shuri-kun’s provocation, Leonis steps forward. It seems both of them are eager to fight.
In that case, let us grant their wish and begin promptly.
“Then, please begin the fifth gate.”
Perhaps surprised that I declared the start without any visible preparation, Leonis turns to me and questions it.
“Is that acceptable?”
“Yes, that’s perfectly fine.”
He may begin whenever he wishes. A surprise attack would be fine as well.
After all, an opponent who was only capable of having a close match with Marceline poses no issue whatsoever.
The current Shuri-kun is so powerful that even if Marceline fought him a hundred times, she would not win once.
Whether aware of my thoughts or not, Leonis charges at full force toward Shuri-kun, who appears completely unprepared, and throws a punch.
The blow seems certain to connect.
However, in the very next instant, a sharp gakin sound rings out as his fist is stopped.
“What?!”
Leonis-san’s punch has been blocked by a suddenly appearing glowing magic circle.
“Ahh, how boring~”
In Shuri-kun’s hand is a glowing quill pen.
“A straightforward charge. A brute-force, honest-to-a-fault attack. Something like that can be stopped easily with a single magic circle that signifies «Severance».”
As he speaks, Shuri-kun’s eyes have already lost interest, regarding Leonis as though he were nothing more than a pebble by the roadside.
“Why don’t you just step aside already?”
And the next instant—
Using the glowing quill, Shuri-kun writes countless magic circles into the air in a single breath.
“«Explode».”
With that single key word—
Countless explosions erupt around Leonis, surrounding him on all sides.

E/N:
Why did I imagine Yondu's Yaka arrow from Guardians of the Gala*y when I read Shuri-kun wielding the quill? 😂
Anyway, this was our first time seeing Shuri-kun fight! His first attack spell was Megumin herself 😂!
Stay tuned!
