Soul Devourer Chapter 2 Episode 16 — Hunter Activities Resume

With the unpacking and furniture setup finally finished, our lives settled back into their usual rhythm.

Since none of us really knew the area well, Dad and Mom talked about using their days off to walk around and get familiar with the surroundings.

I wasn’t interested, so starting today I planned to resume my Hunter activities and continue clearing dungeons.

That said, every A-rank and S-rank dungeon in Tokyo was already cleared. So I intended to travel out of the prefecture and go around the A-rank dungeons elsewhere.

I had already decided on the first destination. After quickly getting ready, I swung open the front door.

After about three hours on the bullet train (E/N: Shinkansen 🚅), I arrived in Kyoto, a city filled with cultural treasures and elegant maiko.

I honestly had zero interest in sightseeing, but maiko… that was a different story. Still, I’d heard that many establishments don’t admit first-time customers, so visiting might be difficult.

Thinking about that while following my phone’s map, I eventually arrived at the dungeon entrance.

Just walking here had already shown me how intense the stares and camera shutters were.

The birth of a new S-rank Hunter was still fresh in everyone’s mind. Being the center of attention was unavoidable.

I had no intention of hiding, so I walked openly. Then a young man holding a phone rushed up to me.

“Excuse me, Hunter Matsubara!”

“Yes?”

“My name is Keisuke Matsumoto! It’s an honor to meet you!”

“Ah, th-thank you.”

No one had ever approached me with this much enthusiasm, and the sheer energy made me falter a bit.

“You came here… so you’re planning to clear this dungeon, right?!”

“Y-yes.”

“I heard you cleared an S-rank dungeon solo! Are you going to clear this one solo as well?”

“That’s the plan.”

Hearing my response, the surrounding people — especially the Hunters — let out impressed murmurs.

“As expected! Sorry for taking up your time! I’m a Huntuber and an A-rank Hunter. If you ever need anything, feel free to contact me!”

He handed me something like a business card, stepped aside to open the path, and kept filming.

“Thank you. Um… can I contact you about things not related to the dungeon as well?”

“Yes! Please do!”

The young man smiled so brightly it almost sparkled, and I bowed lightly before walking again.

*I hope he knows something about maiko…

With my head full of maiko instead of the high-level dungeon in front of me, I finished the entry procedure and stepped inside the dungeon entrance.

E/N:

Yuito is interested in Maiko? Well, I'll be damned!

FYI, Maiko are women apprentice entertainers who entertain guests with classical music, dance, tea ceremony and refined conversations, even board games!

They wear bright, flashy kimonos with long sleeves, conspicuous hair ornaments and high wooden sandals (called Geta, not Geto 😂).

They are famously found in Kyoto, the old capital that preserves the traditional values and landmarks of Japan, well… the locals can be somewhat cold, though. (Still, I wanna go! Anyone else?)

The master or professional counterpart of Maiko are Geisha. Historically, royal or high-end prostitutes, in the modern era, these women are masters of what the Maiko are training in.

In contrast, they wear subdued coloured kimonos and they symbolize mature entertainers that have gone past their youth (not in a bad sense, of course).

Stay tuned!
