Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 60 — The Great Dark Knight Who Excels in Close Combat

When I entered the boss room, it was the same as the corridor leading up to it — orderly stone walls enclosing all sides.

Ten orbs of light dropped from above, followed by one slightly larger orb. All of them shone brightly at once, revealing eleven monsters.

Ten were the Living Armors I’d defeated countless times, and the last one was wrapped in a sinister jet-black full suit of armor, gripping a greatsword as tall as itself.

The most striking feature was that it had no head on its neck — it carried its own head in its hand.

“Its name is Dullahan, huh. Its stats and skill levels being higher than the Living Armors is expected, but there’s one skill that stands out.”

As I thought it over, the Dullahan tossed its own head straight up. Instead of falling, the head hovered in the air, its gaze fixed on me.

A red glow filled the slit of its helmet, and from it spread a wave of red energy. I waited to see what would happen, but nothing affected my body or mind.

“What was that supposed to be?”

If it didn’t work, then there was no point worrying about it. My turn.

“«Wind Slash»”

A massive blade of wind tore through the Living Armors, cutting their sturdy armor with ease.

I’d fought plenty of Living Armors. There was nothing more to gain from them. I finished the rest quickly and focused on the Dullahan.

I readied my short swords and watched its movements. It began to walk slowly, then accelerated.

In an instant it closed the distance, bringing its massive sword down in a fierce strike. The impact echoed like thunder and cracks stretched out behind me.

It immediately followed with a sweeping slash. I caught the greatsword with both short swords. Then came an upward swing; I leapt back to avoid it.

The Dullahan closed in again, its swings sharper and heavier than before. I stopped the blow easily enough, but then its armored leg shot up and kicked me in the side.

I stabilized myself midair, landed, and rushed forward. Blades collided violently.

“Take this!”

I forced its greatsword aside and closed in further, slashing at the now-exposed torso. But the Dullahan smoothly twisted away and kicked toward my temple.

I blocked with a blade, though the impact pushed me back slightly. After landing, both of us faced off again.

“It doesn’t seem to have the【Martial Arts】skill, but you’re pretty good at close-quarters combat. You’re strong.”

But I’d had enough fun. Time to end it.

“I’m good at fighting in ways you don’t expect. I’m an assassin, after all.”

I activated【Stealth】and vanished, moving directly under the floating head. Leaping high, I sliced it cleanly in two.

Right after, the Dullahan’s body collapsed as if its battery had been drained.

    2. Speaking of her, I find her abilities (umbrakinesis) in high regard and very inspiring. There a WN I read where MC 'stole' similar power, and despite it potentially been with high affinity with his magic author almost never develop it (pitfall of all OP protagonists, too many powers/abilities to keep track of or use). I was very frustrated. Especially after release of "Have a Nice Death" ('The Cloak' weapons).

    3. What WN was it? If you know… And I haven't played that game, will check out!

May the Shadow guide you! 😂

    4. "The Death Mage Who Doesn't Want a Fourth Time." There's also a manga too (currently Raws up to chapter 71 (WN 94) and translated up to chapter 68 (WN 92)). Technically, WN is already complete. Fair warning, it's somewhat similar to One Piece in how 'slow burn' it is at the beginning. As for revenge, even if that's the main character's goal, he (at the beginning) still has other things to do, mainly survival (the world hates him just for existing).
Shadow "power" (unfortunately) appears much later, pass the midpoint (Chapter 220), and is part of a slightly different power structure. Raws (manga) will only begin to explain them in chapter 72 (or WN 95). We saw a glimpse of it at the end of chapter 56 (WN 79).
There's a link buried somewhere on Reddit to a "goggle doc" with a basic translation/narration of the latest chapters, including questions/comments to the author from Japanese readers and his responses (similar to Oda's SBS or Kubo's "Club Outside").
I've rambled on too much and given unnecessary information, and likely spoilers, sorry about that. An indicator of how much I loved that series and its potential...

    5. Wow, it's been what? 3 years that I have read Death Mage... I remember having my heart sunk when his mo**er died in the beginning... And I can't ever forgive that stupid Rodiot ffs. I'm really happy to find people who appreciate Death Mage.

    6. Dropped right after the first chapter back then, due to the anger and rest of emotions. Took some years to pick up again, glad I did it.

    7. So relatable! All we need is a little courage 💪

  2. Speaking of Dullahan, this guy from Konosuba, always finds it weird his water weakness. Even before Aqua showered him in her 'Holy Water'.

    1. Wasn't her name Verdia or something? Iirc. Also, I read somewhere that Dullahans can't cross running water bodies? Maybe that was exaggerated in KonoSuba?

    2. There Dullahan boss fight in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood aka Castlevania: Dracula X (don't think about how many names a Castlevania game can have) he periodically levitating his head to attack player, but most troublesome is 'desperation attack' (after all boss HP been depleted for (one for every boss)) - head levitate for a moment, then shot a wave of 'bullets' that need to be dodged.

    3. Oohh… Sorry, no clue, haven't played it myself, just saw a few small-fry battles that my friend played. Will check it out!
