Konbini Ossan Volume 6 Chapter 3 — Arisa’s Tears

After a short while, only Mimori returned. Arisa kept walking ahead alone.

“Um, Otogi-san. I talked with Arisa-chan. May I tell you what she said?”

“Yes. What did you two talk about?”

When I asked, Mimori looked at me with sad eyes.

“She’s no longer misunderstanding what happened that night. She said that when she thought about it later, it didn’t make sense, so she realized she was mistaken. She told me not to worry, that she’s not mad at me at all.”

So that misunderstanding had already been resolved.

But if that was the case, why did Mimori look so down?

“So I asked her why she’s been acting strange lately. And she said she was the one who was wrong.”

“Wrong…?”

“Yes. She said she’s been watching you all this time, so she knew perfectly well how you felt. At first she was excited, thinking she had a chance.
But no matter how hard she tried, you kept rejecting her. And that hurt her even more.”

Her words struck painfully.

There was no denying it — my choices had hurt Arisa.

“She said… if you were going that far, then you must be right. That she was wrong this whole time.”

I opened my mouth to deny it, but swallowed the words.

Explaining it here wouldn’t help her.

Arisa had never been wrong.

I simply could not accept her feelings — that was all.

She didn’t need to blame herself.

“Otogi-san. You really should talk to her properly.”

Kanehama spoke gently.

“Yes. I can’t let this go on.”

I hurried ahead, toward Arisa.

“Arisa-san!”

I reached her and called out immediately.

“…What, old man.”

“I’d like to talk.”

“About what?”

Her tone pushed me away, and I faltered.

“Ah, sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”

(E/N: The nuance here is, Ossan wants to talk heart-to-heart, not lecture her or give any advice. That's why he said this line. 😭)

Noticing my reaction, she quickly corrected herself.

“It’s just… a lot happened. So I thought I should cool my head a bit. And… I’m done trying. Not with everything, okay? Just… the boyfriend-girlfriend thing. I’m not aiming for that anymore.”

“Is that your decision?”

She nodded.

“Yeah. Honestly, I still like you. I still love you. But if you don’t want that, then fine. You have your happiness, and I’ve got mine. We both do our best. That’s all. That’s all there is.”

Her voice trembled at the end.
Worried, I leaned closer.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

“Arisa!”

“Huh…? Haha. Weird. That wasn’t… I didn’t mean to cry. Man, this is bad.”

The more she spoke, the more tears spilled.

“No, sorry. It’s not— really not like that.”

“Arisa, I-”

“Not now. Don’t come near me. Just leave me alone.”

I reached toward her, wanting to comfort her somehow.

But she slapped my hand away and turned away from me.

Then she ran, tears still falling, farther down the road.

I could only watch her leave.

Rejected, unable to find any words, unable to decide what to do.

I just stood there, helpless.
