Konbini Ossan Volume 5 Chapter 12 — The Land Shark’s Defeat

While the mysterious blond man was still frowning in thought, I debated whether or not to speak to him.

He looked like someone important — maybe a noble or a wealthy merchant — so it might be worth hearing his perspective.

Then again, there was always the chance he was just a strange eccentric, and I’d be wasting my time.

I was still deciding what to do when—

“Oi, I’m comin’ in!”

A rough-looking man burst into the tofu shop. Everything about him screamed trouble — from the greasy grin to the massive battle axe strapped across his back.

I glanced at the old woman behind the counter, wondering if he might be a customer. Her scowl answered that question for me.

“You again? What is it this time?”

“Tch, don’t play dumb, granny. I came to ask if you’ve finally decided to close this dump.”

“I’ve told you before. This shop has history. I’m not closing it down.”

“Yeah, yeah, heard that one already. I’m tellin’ ya, we’re gonna tear this dump down and build a new tofu factory in its place.
You’re too old to keep this up anyway, so do the smart thing and hand it over. Get it, hag?”

The man leaned over the counter, radiating hostility. This wasn’t some wandering thug — he was a hired enforcer.

“Excuse me,” I said, tapping his shoulder lightly.

“Huh?”

He turned, snarling — just in time to catch my fist squarely across his face.

gaBEH!”

The man let out a strangled cry and crashed onto his back. I’d held back, of course — he wasn’t dead, just dazed enough to see stars for a while.

“Ah, good. I thought there was a fly on your face, but it seems I took care of it.”

I grabbed the man by the collar and hauled him upright with one hand.

“Now then — was there something else you needed?”

“N-no! I’m done here!”

I smiled pleasantly as I asked, and the thug’s survival instincts took over. He scrambled to his feet and bolted for the door, fleeing into the street without looking back.

The old woman, utterly stunned, looked from me to the doorway and back again, her hands trembling slightly.

Then —

“Splendid!”

The blond man who’d been watching the scene broke into applause.

“To face an armed ruffian without hesitation, and all for the sake of protecting this venerable tofu brewery! A man of courage and honor indeed. May I ask your name?”

“Ah… I’m Yuichi Otsugi.”

The man’s eyes widened. He touched his chin thoughtfully.

“Yuichi Otsugi… surely you’re the one they’ve been speaking of in the capital — the proprietor of that remarkable magic tool shop?”

“Well, I do run such a shop, yes. I can’t say how much of a topic I’ve become, but that would be me.”

“Marvelous!”

The man clapped his hands together, and with a graceful motion pulled back his hood.

“I should introduce myself properly. I am Roosevelt von Waynesvale — lord of this city and its surrounding lands.”

So the mysterious blond man turned out to be none other than the ruling lord himself.
