Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 3 — The New Store Manager

Now that the land for building the factory has been secured, the next task is to appoint a new manager for the magic tools shop.

After all, I’ll be tied up with the factory for quite some time. During that period, someone else has to take charge of the shop’s management.

Even I only have one body. It’s impossible to run both the factory and the shop at the same time.

So, a new manager must be appointed. There are two candidates.

The first is Arisa. She has been helping run the shop since the beginning, and with the growth of «Calculator» lately, she’s become quite skilled at handling numbers.

She would do an excellent job managing sales figures and inventory calculations.

The other is Maria. She lives in the area and, thanks to being the wife of an A-rank adventurer, she has plenty of connections.

She’s good at gathering information on local demand and reputation from the neighborhood wives. She’s also sharp, and has quickly picked up the knowledge needed to manage a shop.

At this point, she’s practically in a part-leader position. Entrusting her with management decisions would surely allow her to run the shop smoothly.

I haven’t decided which of the two to choose. I plan to talk with them first before making the decision.

So, I began by calling Arisa.

I explained that I would be building a factory, that I’d be away from the shop because of it, and that I was looking for a new manager. Then I asked her.

“Me, as manager? You really think I can pull that off?”

“Yes. You’ve been working seriously lately, and thanks to «Calculator» you’ve gotten good with numbers. I thought you’d be reliable enough to entrust the shop with.”

At my words, Arisa frowned.

“Maybe I could, but honestly, I don’t have the confidence. If I were suddenly told to run the place, I can’t even picture what I’m supposed to do.”

“I see, I understand.”

Indeed, leaving the entire management of the shop to Arisa might be a bit worrisome.

Since she declined, that left Maria.

So I asked her next.

“To be honest, I think it would be difficult for me as well.”

She turned me down with a troubled look.

“May I ask the reason?”

“Yes. If I were in charge, I think my management decisions would lean too much toward the customers’ side. That kind of bias would not be ideal for someone entrusted with the whole shop.”

I see. Maria is close with the local wives and familiar adventurers. It’s possible she would prioritize their interests too much, leading to less than ideal outcomes for the store itself.

That possibility does exist. But even so, worrying about it too much seems unnecessary.

“Are you certain you can’t?”

“Yes. I believe there is someone more suitable than me.”

Her stance was firm.

It seems I’ll need to come up with another solution.

A managing position is the best if your superior is kind and an employee position is best if the manager is kind.
