Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 17 — The Mechanism Behind the Newhalf Magic
I called out to Matsuriya, who was walking ahead, and voiced the question that had been on my mind.
“By the way, there’s something I’ve been curious about.”
“What is it?”
“What exactly is this ‘Newhalf Magic’?”
“Ah, now that you mention it, I never explained that, did I?”
Matsuriya turned back with a cheerful look and began to talk. I quickened my pace so I could walk beside him.
“To start from the beginning, what I originally aimed to create was a temporary feminization spell — in other words, a gender transformation magic.

By reusing part of that, I thought I could let someone keep their male body while gaining a more feminine physique.”
“Oh? And did that succeed?”
“Yes, perfectly. Temporary feminization, of course, but permanent transformation is possible too.

I worked on it with my mentor — a court magician — and together we completed the feminization spell.”
So he actually perfected a magic that can turn a man into a woman.
It seems Matsuriya already has considerable ability as a magic researcher. Perhaps I’ll have to rely on him in that field one day.
…But my thoughts wandered too far.
“Then this Newhalf Magic was completed by using a part of that feminization magic?”
“No, it wasn’t that simple.”
Matsuriya shook his head, looking a little disappointed.
“Actually, through my research, I discovered something quite shocking. To put it simply — it seems that we summoned heroes aren’t human.”
“What?”
His sudden statement left me speechless. The heroes aren’t human?
That would mean I’m not human either. That’s not something I can ignore.
“Only a few court magicians and I know this, but heroes are something like unique monsters — beings that resemble humans in shape, but are actually closer to magical creatures.

Feminization magic is based on human biology, so it didn’t work properly on us.”
“I see… but before that, I have to ask.”
“Yes?”
I stopped him before he went further about the feminization magic.
“Is it really true that heroes like us are closer to monsters?”
“Yes. I even provided my own samples for testing. There’s no mistake. The clearest evidence is our appearance — take our hair and faces, for example.

It’s been over a year since we were summoned, but not a single hero has had their hair grow.”
Now that he mentions it… I can’t remember ever needing a haircut either. I thought it was some kind of bonus from being a summoned hero.
“Monsters rarely change as they grow. They maintain a fixed appearance. That matches the traits of heroes.

I’m sure that in a few decades, people will realize that heroes, like monsters, don’t age.”
“I see… I can’t deny that’s quite surprising.”
I took a deep breath to calm myself. So, heroes are a different species altogether. That much is enough to know.
There’s no need to dwell on it — after all, we’ve been outsiders in this world from the start.
Stats, skills — those are already abnormalities. Our very species being abnormal is simply one more fact.
“Anyway, let’s get back to the topic.”
Matsuriya continued.
“Since the feminization magic couldn’t work directly, it was impossible to alter the physical structure of my unique species.

I couldn’t exactly kill myself for dissection to collect more data, so I never had enough to complete a full transformation spell.”
“I understand. Then what exactly is this Newhalf Magic?”
“Well, that’s when I thought differently. I realized I didn’t need to magically alter my body’s structure itself — I could take a more traditional approach.”
Matsuriya spoke with a confident grin.
“In the old days, women used corsets to reshape their figures. There were also practices like foot binding — applying pressure to change one’s form. Interestingly, there are regions in this world with similar customs.”
Hearing that, I started to understand what he meant by the mechanism behind Newhalf Magic.
But I stayed quiet, letting him continue, since he clearly wanted to explain.
“So I created a magic that doesn’t modify the body directly, but applies constant pressure to reshape it — correcting the structure over time. It adjusts masculine bone structure into a more feminine one.

You can clearly see it in the pelvis and shoulders. It even compresses the abdomen to create a slimmer waist.”
“So Newhalf Magic is essentially a skeletal correction spell?”
“Exactly. To make the correction more effective, it also influences the body — adjusting how fat is distributed, for instance. Without that, the figure would still look masculine.

I couldn’t achieve a full biological transformation, but I could manage this much, so I built it into the Newhalf Magic.”
So the Newhalf Magic is a combination of skeletal adjustment and mild transformation magic.
“Right now, the magic still needs to stay active constantly. But in a few more months, the correction will complete, and I won’t have to maintain the spell anymore.

It takes time, but the magic itself is practically finished.”
“I see. By the way, your chest seems to have some volume — is that part of the Newhalf Magic too?”
“Oh, that? No, that’s a different spell. It’s a fake-breast magic that creates pad-like layers on the chest. I finished that one in a day, so it’s hardly worth mentioning.”
So Matsuriya is keeping two spells active at all times. Acting feminine must be a great deal of effort. On top of that, gestures and mannerisms have to match too.
No wonder he struggles so much.
And to go that far just to reach me — well, I can’t take that lightly.
Whether I accept or refuse, I’ll have to give it serious thought.
