Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 14 — Dinner with the Heroes
It seemed nearly everyone from Kanhama’s group had already gathered in the dining hall.
“Looks like everyone who had some free time today showed up — except for Yuuki. Go ahead and sit anywhere you like, Otsugi-san.”
“Thank you. I appreciate the invitation.”
I gave my thanks and took a seat.
Incidentally, the heroes’ meals were always handled with special care.
The food was prepared according to the number of people expected, so even with me added in, it wouldn’t be a problem.
After I sat down, Mimori and Toudou also took their seats. Only Kanehama remained standing, addressing everyone.
“Thanks for gathering, everyone. I was planning for a simple information exchange today, but as it happens, we’ve found ourselves a good ally, so I’d like to introduce him. Otsugi-san, if you would.”
Despite sounding like he was leading the meeting, Kanhama-kun gestured for me to introduce myself. Well, that’s fine. Let’s just go along with it.
“Nice to meet you all. My name is Yuichi Otsugi. I’m just an ordinary middle-aged man who was summoned here along with you. These days I run a magic tools shop in town.”
I briefly explained who I was and finished my introduction. Apparently that was enough — Kanehama nodded, satisfied.
“People like Otsugi-san, external allies, are rare. I hope everyone gets along with him.”
At his closing words, the others murmured short acknowledgements.
“Alright, let’s go through introductions on our side. Since Yuuki, Youta, and Saori already know me, we can skip that. Let’s start with Nishina-san.”
Kanhama glanced toward the girl sitting next to Toudou. She nodded and stood.
“I’m Yuki Nishina. The goddess gave me the skill «Magic Nullification». I’m also Saori’s childhood friend. If you try anything weird with her, I won’t forgive you.”
Throwing a sharp, intimidating look around, Nishina sat back down. I had no intention of doing anything to Mimori, of course, but I’d best be careful not to offend her.
She looked like the type who’d be a hassle if angered.
Next, the boy sitting beside her stood to introduce himself.
“I’m Shouzou Mayama! My cheat skill is «Absolute Appraisal». Nice to meet ya!”
Mayama introduced himself cheerfully, but something about his tone and gestures felt forced. Maybe he wasn’t used to acting so casually.
“This guy’s been full of himself ever since he got that skill. Otsugi-san, better not take him too seriously,” Nishina added.
“H-hey! Come on, that’s not fair! My «Absolute Appraisal» really is god-tier, you know! It’s one of the classics among reincarnation cheats!”
He protested in a panic. I see — judging from his words and demeanor, his inflated confidence in his own power had probably changed his attitude, earning him a poor reputation among his peers.
“Alright, alright, no fighting. We’re not even done with introductions yet.”
Kanhama stepped in to mediate, ending their argument. Then, the woman sitting next to them stood.
“I’m Ayumi Suzuhara. I used to be a school nurse at Matsugaya. The skill I received when summoned was «Complete Recovery».”
With that brief introduction, she sat down again. Indeed, judging by her appearance, she didn’t look like a student. Her being a nurse made sense.
The next woman who stood seemed about the same age — and looked familiar.
Slightly plump, the type of woman I personally liked. I remembered thinking that before.
“I’m Tomoe Kinoshita. I was these kids’ homeroom teacher. My skill is «Assassination Technique», but honestly, I still don’t really know how to use it properly. I haven’t been much help.”
Her expression dimmed as she explained, but Toudou quickly spoke up to encourage her.
“No way, Tomo-chan! You’ve been doing your best for everyone! Don’t worry about it!”
“Yeah, Sensei. Without you, all of us would’ve fallen apart by now. You’ve been our emotional support.”
“Ah… thank you, Youta-kun, Keiichi-kun.”
With both Toudou and Kanehama reassuring her, Kinoshita seemed to regain her spirits.
That wrapped up the introductions.
“So, roughly speaking, the people here make up about half of our faction.”
Kanhama began to explain their group’s current situation.
“Half, you say? The rest belong to Naitou’s faction?”
“No, the Naitou group is actually smaller. The others are neutral — or rather, isolated.
…
Some have ties with people in the royal palace, some refuse to get involved with either side, and some are just waiting to see how things play out. It’s really all over the place.”
“I see.”
“That’s probably why Yuuki’s been trying so hard to build alliances. Honestly, it was his idea to reach out to you, Otsugi-san.
…
If not for him, I doubt we’d have thought to rely on an outsider.”
That explained a lot. By the time Matsuriya noticed Naitou’s suspicious moves, the factions were already taking shape.
He must have realized he needed to secure allies quickly — to shift the power balance and gain leverage to protect themselves.
That probably included bringing in someone like me from outside. Now it made sense why Kanhama had been so polite despite barely knowing me.
“So, where is Matsuriya-kun now?”
“He should be around. As soon as he got back to the palace, though, he locked himself in his room. He should be here any minute.”
Just as we were speaking—
The dining hall doors swung open with a loud BANG!
“Sorry to keep you waiting!”
A familiar voice echoed through the room. Matsuriya’s voice. Everyone turned toward the doorway — myself included.
Then I tilted my head in confusion.
“You’re late, Yuuki.”
“Hmph. I was touching up my makeup. It took some time, alright?”
Standing there was a woman I didn’t recognize — speaking in a voice that unmistakably belonged to Matsuriya Yuuki.
