Konbini Ossan Volume 3 Chapter 12 — A Bad Adult

“Hah? Old man, didn’t you say back when that court magician came? You told him you’d make this country win the war so it could end!”

Arisa raised her voice, clearly not satisfied. I should explain this properly.

Or rather, the mistake was mine for not explaining to her sooner. I let her carry that misunderstanding all this time.

“Arisa-san. You’re under a serious misapprehension.”

“Hah? What are you talking about?”

“That day, I spoke with Shuri-kun about the means by which this country could win a war.
What kind of measures would be necessary if they were to win.”

I paused for a moment, then opened my mouth again to lay out the crucial point.

“But I never once promised that I would make this country win the war.”

At my words, Arisa’s face went blank in surprise. Perhaps I should explain a bit more clearly.

“The conversation that day was hypothetical. If I were to cooperate with this country in winning a war, what would I do?
Even if I have no intention of cooperating, it isn’t impossible to speak of what I would do if I did.
Well, if I let the other side misunderstand, then I suppose I should apologize for that.”

“Hahaha! So that’s what you were up to, Otsugi-san! As expected of you!”

Catching on to the flow, Matsuriya Yuuki let out a laugh.

“Hey, delinquent girl. Since you don’t seem to get it, I’ll explain. In other words, Otsugi-san tricked the people on the kingdom’s side.
He made them believe he was an ally, choosing his words carefully. He didn’t tell a lie — he just let them misunderstand in a way that suited him.”

Finally grasping it, Arisa’s eyes widened.

“Old man! Isn’t that, like, dangerous? And besides, if you don’t win the war, how are you gonna make peace or safety real?”

She threw out another doubt. I answered her point by point.

“Arisa-san. Adults use appearances and convenient words to move others in ways that suit them. Especially people like me.
Tricking others and using them for one’s own purposes — well, that’s just ordinary.”

At my reply, Arisa let out a dumbfounded sigh.

“So, that means you’re tricking that Shriva guy too?”

“That’s right. Arisa-san, you’d best be careful not to get deceived by bad adults.”

Well, in Shuri-kun’s case, he may well know and still play along. Bad adults sometimes pretend to be foolish for their own convenience.

In society, there are plenty of situations where one needs the pretext of an unavoidable blunder.

“Then what, all that talk about ending the war and peace and safety was a lie too?”

Now she seemed to doubt everything I had said. That reaction is only natural after being deceived once.

But leaving her with that misunderstanding would be troublesome, so I clarified.

“No. That much is my true intention. I genuinely want to end the war. My ultimate goal is to secure safety.
And as a second goal, I want to save the students summoned from Mitsugaya High.
Well, that second goal comes with the caveat of ‘as far as possible’.”

For example, those delinquent friends of Arisa’s — depending on circumstances, I may not save them.

I have no intention of rescuing dyed-in-the-wool villains, even if they are children.

“Ahh, geez! What the hell, old man!? I don’t even know what to think about you anymore!”

Arisa grumbled in a weary tone.

Hmm. If we don’t reach a proper mutual understanding, it could hinder the plan later. It seems best to lay out my goals clearly for her.

With that in mind, I decided to tell Arisa about myself.

The night is long, and tonight we have a new ally in Matsuriya-kun. I’ll take my time and make sure they understand my thinking.
