Konbini Ossan Volume 2 Chapter 5 – Arisa and the Old Man’s Current Status

“Hey, old man. Turns out you're actually strong, huh?”

Arisa calls out to me from behind. Her voice carries a tone of relief, much gentler than usual.

It feels good knowing I protected my niece and looked cool doing it.

“Well, I did spend about three months working as an adventurer.”

I answer her vaguely, trying to keep things humble.

“Huh. And just doing that made you that strong?”

“No, probably not. So don’t try copying me, okay, Arisa-san?”

“Don’t treat me like a kid, dumbass. So how did you actually get strong?”

“Well, I have something like a skill that boosts my level in proportion to how much I work.”

“…Seriously?”

Arisa looks genuinely surprised and skeptical. But it's the truth, so I nod in affirmation.

In fact, this is what my current status looks like:

——————————

Name: Yuichi Otogi
Level: 112

Strength: B
Magic: B
Stamina: B
Agility: B

Attribute: None

Skill: ERROR

——————————

Compared to my level, my stats are actually pretty low—but still, everything is ranked B.

Those thugs probably only had Strength ranked around E or D at best.

There’s no way they could’ve hurt someone like me with Stamina ranked B.

If they had used weapons, it might’ve been a different story—but even then, I’d have responded accordingly.

“By the way, Arisa-san, weren’t you supposed to be a Hero? Couldn’t you have just scared off those thugs with your status?”

“Shut up. I couldn’t, alright?”

With a bit of frustration, Arisa displays her status plate and shows it to me:

——————————

Name: Arisa Mikimoto
Level: 8

Strength: E
Magic: A
Stamina: E
Agility: E

Attribute: None

Skill: Calculator

——————————

Even at level 8, her Magic stat is already higher than mine. As expected of a Hero.

The rest of her stats are average, though. Still, for a high school girl, E-rank stats are on par with an adult male, so she’s actually quite capable.

That said, surrounded by trained adventurers, she didn’t stand a chance.

She also has no element, which makes it hard to utilize that impressive Magic stat effectively.

And her skill, Calculator, isn’t exactly an easy one to use either.

...Well, I already have a few ideas on how we can make use of her skill. Nothing fancy, though.

Seeing Arisa looking awkward about her status plate, I offer her some encouragement.

“Arisa-san, having those kinds of stats at just level 8 is actually really impressive.”

“Yeah right. Easy for you to say since you're already strong.”

“True, I am feeling a little cocky now that I’ve gotten stronger. But seriously, Arisa-san, you’re amazing too.”

“You’re supposed to be humble in moments like this, you know!”

Arisa snaps back at me. I guess being too honest can be a problem too.

“...By the way, old man. I didn’t expect you to resort to violence like that.”

“Well, I’ve grown a lot since coming to this world. Oh, wanna see my status?”

“Is that a flex?”

“Absolutely. I want my adorable niece to praise me more.”

“Gross. Stop it, old man.”

“Sorry, Arisa-san.”

As we talk, Arisa and I walk home side by side.

“But, y'know, I wouldn’t call it resorting to violence. I’m just willing to show off a little when it comes to dealing with bad people.”

“So you're not denying you like to show off?”

“Of course not. That’s been my dream ever since my days working at a convenience store.”

“What does working at a convenience store have to do with anything?! That makes no sense!”
(E/N: That's what I'm sayin'! 🥴)

“Oh, it absolutely does. Every convenience store worker holds a grudge against the minions of evil gods.”

“...Huh?!”

For reference, minions of evil gods is a metaphor.

If customers are considered gods, then the rude ones are possessed by evil gods. Rude people, in turn, are their(evil god) followers.

I used to silently call those kinds of customers dark gods while working, praying daily for their defeat.

Because of that, seeing people with bad manners or who act selfishly just makes me want to slay the evil god in them.

It’s basically a reflex, forged during my time as a convenience store clerk.

“Anyway, if anything ever happens to you, Arisa-san, I’ll be there to protect you. You can count on that.”

“O-oh. Thanks, old man.”

Right before entering the house, Arisa stops and mumbles something.

“You’re kind, and you’re strong… If only you still had Yuichi Onii-chan’s face, you’d be perfect...”

“Hmm? Did you say something?”

She mutters something under her breath, but with the noise of the street and the door opening, I can’t quite make it out.

“It’s nothing, old man!”

She shouts back and suddenly shoves me from behind. I stumble forward into the house.

Hmm… To think I’m disliked enough to be pushed around like this. I really ought to treat Arisa more gently from now on.

If I make up for her dislike with enough kindness, I’m sure we’ll eventually get along just fine.

E/N:

Arisa's a tsundere through and through but Ossan is becoming pretty strong, huh! He's still the protagonist though, so denseness still follows him. Stay tuned!

    1. True, maybe they'll go in later chapters for power levelling

    2. I’ll admit it was the first thing that occurred to me. Or he could use his disease skill to allow her to lazy level up while minding the store…

    3. Not sure if that strategy would work but let's see!
