Konbini Ossan Volume 2 Chapter 17 – The Future of the Children
In the end, I continued playing with the children for about an hour. Although, I was mostly the one being chased.
Eventually, I gave up and escaped from the game of tag. Now, I am watching over the children running around together with Isabella.
“The children are so energetic, aren't they?”
“Yes. They are always lively and playing around. Thanks to that, I feel energized just watching them.”
“Indeed. Seeing lively children is a good thing.”
Isabella and I nod in agreement. However, truly watching the children is very healing.
It brings peace of mind. Of course, in a healthy sense.
(E/N: Is there any other sense?! 🤨)
At this point, I ask Isabella about something.
“By the way, Isabella. I have a few questions I’d like to ask.”
“Yes, what is it?”
“You mentioned that a girl skilled in sewing originally started making robes, correct?"
“Yes. Her name is Rosa. It seems she learned from her mother before becoming an orphan.
…
Since coming here, she has been sewing constantly.”
“I see, so that’s how it was. It’s understandable that she became so absorbed.”
While speaking, I think of something else and ask the next question.
“So, Rosa was not originally an orphan. Did she recently lose her parents?”
“Yes. Given the current times, many families have lost their fathers in the war against the Demon King.
…
When that happens, a single mother has to raise her children alone.
…
It’s not uncommon for mothers to pass away due to illness or accidents, which has resulted in an increase in children like Rosa.”
This was roughly the answer I expected.
Looking at this orphanage, there are too many children. And now, it’s wartime.
The reason for the increase in orphans is obvious.
Still, confirming this has its purpose. The difference in weight between an almost certain assumption and confirmed facts is significant.
In other words, the reliability of the information. I wanted more reliable information that "the number of orphans will continue to increase."
After all, I plan to utilize these orphans as workers from now on. Whether the supply of labor remains stable is crucial.
(E/N: So basically child labour but the children get decent or better pay?)
And from the premise, the number of orphans will continue to grow as long as the war persists.
Since they will increase, there’s no reason not to utilize this labor force. Also, if there are jobs, the children will be helped.
I certainly do not intend to treat them badly.
Having confirmed one of the things I wanted to check, I switch to a different topic. I change the subject as if to divert from an awkward topic.
“By the way, are there other children like Rosa who have special skills?”
“Um, yes. There are various children. Some like growing flowers, others have leadership qualities and are caring.
…
The one organizing the children’s play now is that child. His name is Joan.”
Pointing to a tall boy running around in the yard, Isabella introduces him.
I see. The boy who dragged me into the game of chase is Joan.
After that, I asked Isabella in detail about the children’s special skills.
The reason is simple. I plan to have the children focus on their specialized work as professionals.
In the future, the items handled in my shop will be diverse.
If there is a suitable person among the children to produce the necessary items, I intend to leave it to them.
Currently, I only handle robes, so Rosa, who is skilled in sewing, is the only suitable person.
But if I ask someone to cultivate medicinal herbs, it would be better to have a child who likes growing flowers do it.
Also, I plan to ask the children to handle procurement and delivery in the future. In that case, a child like Joan, who can coordinate, would be helpful.
Well, everything is still just a plan. It’s a distant future story. For now, it’s just a possibility.
However, it’s also true that it’s better to assess the level of that possibility in advance.
So, since I have various motives, I will need to deepen my relationship with this orphanage.
Hehe. I am starting to look forward to the children’s future. I hope they grow into good personnel.
To that end, I will also provide assistance. I will buy books necessary for their education and donate them to the orphanage.
If money is needed, I will also cooperate in the form of donations.
Of course, within the limits of not going bankrupt.
