Konbini Ossan Volume 2 Chapter 2 – Junk Magic Stones

Upon arriving, I first headed to the guild reception.

“Hello, Otsugi-san. What brings you in today?”

The receptionist greeted me with a smile.

Incidentally, it wasn’t Shirley-san — she usually takes afternoons off, so she wasn’t at the guild right now.

“Actually, I was hoping to acquire some magic stones.”

“Magic stones? The guild buys them, but if you’re looking to purchase, we usually direct people to a specialty store.”

The receptionist tilted her head. That was understandable.

Magic stones are crystal-like organs embedded in the bodies of monsters.

They store magical power and act as an energy source that monsters use to function — kind of like how humans store fat.

When a monster is defeated, it usually leaves behind a magic stone.

These stones retain the magic power the monster had stored, making them valuable and something the guild buys from adventurers.

In human society, magic stones are used like batteries.

They’re commonly used not just in households, but by adventurers too — mainly as a power source for magical tools.

However, the magic stones adventurers submit aren't used directly.

They come in various shapes and sizes, and most are too small to be convenient.

So, the guild transfers the magic from these small stones into larger ones, which are easier to use and then distributed to the market.

The tiny stones that were drained of magic in the process? They’re discarded as waste.

“Actually, I’m interested in the junk magic stones.”

Yes, just like I said. I wanted the junk — the discarded, drained, tiny magic stones.

“Hmm, junk stones? What for?”

“I thought I might use them to make pigment for drawing magic circles.”

“Magic circles, huh…”

The receptionist made a sour face. Again, understandable.

Because magic stones store magical energy, they’re theoretically useful as pigment for magic circles.

But to be practically usable, they must be ground into a fine powder and properly processed.

Otherwise, their performance is so poor that they might as well not be used at all.

Besides, not many people even need pigment for drawing magic circles. Meanwhile, the guild receives magic stones in large quantities.

Most drained stones are simply disposed of by the guild.

“Well, they’re essentially trash anyway, so I see no problem.”

“Thank you. I’d be happy to take all the junk stones you’ve got.”

“Alright then, please wait just a moment.”

Despite her grimace, the receptionist gave her approval. That meant I could acquire a key material for free — perfect for business.

I already had an idea of how I’d use them, though it still required some testing before anything was finalized.

Still, if things went well, I’d have essentially sourced my products for free — a very promising start.

“Otsugi-san, will this be enough?”

The receptionist returned. She stepped out from behind the counter, pushing a cart loaded with three bulging sacks.

Judging by the weight, all of them were filled with magic stones — a substantial amount.

“Yes, this is more than enough. Thank you very much.”

“No no, it saves us the trouble of having to dispose of them.”

We thanked each other, then I began transferring the contents of the sacks into my magic storage pouch.

Once filled with the heavy stones, I lifted the pouch. It had gotten slightly heavier, but still felt surprisingly light considering the volume.

That’s the beauty of a magic storage pouch — convenient for reducing cargo weight.

“Well then, thank you again.”

With a polite bow, I left the Adventurer’s Guild.

Now, time to return home and start making products.
