Konbini Ossan Volume 1 Chapter 21 – Adventurer’s Guild

Leaving the royal palace behind, I walked through the capital’s streets with a clear destination in mind: the Adventurer’s Guild.

This world still has vast unexplored regions, due to the presence of monsters and the influence of magic.

And within those untamed lands lie many valuable resources — perhaps precisely because they’re uninhabitable by normal people, they contain rare and magically potent materials.

To harvest those resources, and to hunt monsters themselves as materials, a specific class of workers exists — adventurers.

The Adventurer’s Guild was established to bring order to the originally lawless adventurers. It organizes, manages, and regulates them under clear rules.

You could say it’s like contracting freelance workers under a single brand — standardizing their work for maximum efficiency.

Think of it like a franchise system. The guild takes on the burdens that adventurers alone couldn’t handle.

In return, adventurers follow the guild’s regulations and contribute a portion of their earnings to the organization.

What’s important to understand is that adventurers began as a rough and rowdy bunch — essentially mercenaries.

They delved into danger, fought monsters, and profited from rare resources. They were more like barbarians than heroes.

To manage such a group, the guild introduced a crucial system: identification.

Adventurers travel constantly. Even if someone is trusted in one town, they’re a complete stranger in another.

That makes work inefficient, as they'd need to build trust from scratch wherever they went.

To solve this, the guild assigns ranks and IDs to certify an adventurer’s credibility and skills.

This way, any town can instantly know what someone is capable of and assign appropriate jobs. It’s a brilliant, efficient system.

This is very similar to how modern franchises in Japan operate. A company assigns levels or ranks to its employees across various branches.

When one store is short on staff, a worker from another can be immediately dispatched with full confidence in their ability.

Without such a system, you'd need personal trust to send help. But building that trust takes time, and its reach is limited.

Without structured ranks, a person’s capabilities are restricted to one place.

In fact, even at the convenience store where I used to work, we had a similar system.

Unfortunately, the owner didn’t allow outside help. So whenever we were short-staffed, I had to cover it alone.

…Well, now’s not the time to dwell on unpleasant memories.

While I’d been lost in thought, I had arrived at the Adventurer’s Guild.

Fortunately, I had already researched its location. Plus, the farewell gift from Shuri-kun included a map of the capital. Getting lost was never an option.

"Hey, old man! You’re in the way—move it!"

As I stood in front of the building, staring at the guild sign, someone called out from behind me. I must have been blocking the entrance. I quickly stepped aside.

"My apologies. I’ll be more careful going forward."

"Whoa, you’re really polite, old man! No worries!"

The one who spoke was a muscular adventurer, the textbook image of the profession.

He entered the guild, carrying what looked like a dead wolf-like beast on his back—likely monster loot to sell.

But I wasn’t here to just watch. I had two main goals in coming to the Adventurer’s Guild:

  1. To become an adventurer and receive official identification.

  2. To start accepting jobs and earn enough money to survive.

Everything begins here. Whether I sink or swim depends on what I accomplish from this moment on.

“Alright. Time to get serious.”

With both hands, I slapped my cheeks to psych myself up—then stepped confidently into the Adventurer’s Guild.

E/N:

Guild system beautifully explained by Ossan. I hope there's no corruption in the guild.
